This book was initially created on request by RIRDC, (The Rural Industries Rural Industry Corporation, now trading as Agrifutures) to support the Australian Wildflower industry.
It was recognised that there was an enormous gap in accurate information available with many misunderstandings identified across the floristry industry, especially in the identification, and care and handling practices of Australian native and their related South African species of wildflowers, grown and marketed in Australia and recognised as Australian Wildflowers.
Del Thomas was approached, and she advised that this project needed to be broadened to cover traditional, tropical, orchids and foliages. This was agreed, the funding allocated, and Bettina Gollnow was invited as co-author to bring her expertise, gained from many years as the Cut Flowers extension officer, in the Department of Agriculture and from the Australian Wildflowers industry on board.
